Legislative Day at the Capitol - April 14, 2011
We wish to thank our Senate Majority Leader, Randy Richardville, for another great Legislative Day at our state's Capitol on April 14th! We appreciated starting our day with "Coffee and Rolls" hosted by Senators Judy Emmons and Tonya Schuitmaker. Throughout the day, we were honored to have more than 30 state legislators join us as well as Attorney General Bill Schuette and 'he was on duty'! The Red Coats Are Coming! has been our theme for the day and this was no different! We look forward to having our photo taken with our Republican Senate Majority leader in the Rotunda each year with members, guests and many legislators!
We were honored to have our new Secretary of State, Ruth Johnson, speak about her efforts to reduce fees and budget items throughout the state offices. She has joined forces with Bill Schuette to develop an elections crime unit. They do plan to prosecute offenders and are already active in the state. Copies of the new "Ruth Report" newsletter were distributed to the members. Go online to sign up at www.sosruthjohnson@gmail.com.
We were also pleased to hear from our new Michigan Republican Party Chair, Bobby Schostak. Bobby told us about his efforts to raise funds for the upcoming elections, his vision for 2012 and providing leadership at the headquarters for 'grassroots' activism and efforts to WIN in 2012!
We announced our 2011 RWFM Educational Memorial Scholarship winner, Natalie DeLave from Troy, who will be a full-time student at U of M this fall. We were also pleased to have our 2010 scholarship winner, Samantha Troutman, a freshman at MSU, join us for a special visit to thank the federation for their support!
Jeri Le Roi from Traverse City gave an update to her 2010 report on "Protecting Citizens Vote in Michigan" research and legislative work with our elected officials in Lansing. Representative Dave Agema will be sponsoring a bill to ensure that people who are not citizens, do not get registered to vote.
We were informed by two members about efforts of The Michigan Security Council group to fight Islam in Michigan. We had discussions about the necessity for all members to be informed and educated about the impact this culture has had on our state and government. All clubs and individuals were encouraged to educate themselves about this movement and to become active in their communities.
